1981년 창단 후 1995년 재 창단을 거치면서 현 예술 감독인 한국 합창음악계의 거장 윤학원 교수에 의해 완벽에 가까운 독특한 빛깔의 환상적 하모니와 도전정신이 돋보이는 독창적인 무대연출을 겸비한 개성 있는 합창단으로 거듭나 합창애호가들에게 신선한 충격과 깊은 인상을 남겼다. 정기연주와 다양하고 폭 넓은 레퍼토리, 꾸준한 음반작업을 통해 대중성과 음악성을 고루 갖춘 합창단이라는 평가를 받고 있다.

인천시립합창단의 수차례에 걸친 국내외에서의 활발한 연주활동은 세계 속에 한국 합창음악과 문화적 정서를 심는문화홍보 사절로서의 역할을 가능하게 했고, 그 명성에 맞게 세계적인 합창단이라는 가치를 인정받으며 큰 호응을 얻었다. 1997년 벨기에에서 열린 세계합창연합회가 주최하는 창립 15주년기념 세계 합창제에 초청되었고, 오스트리아 Europa Cantat 연주회에서는 3000여명의 지휘자들이 세 번이나 기립해 박수를 보내는 찬사를 받기도 했다. 1999년 네덜란드 로테르담에서 열린 세계 합창 심포지엄 초청연주와 유럽 순회연주, 2002년 부산 합창올림픽의 갈라 콘서트, 2004년 대만 세계합창제 초청연주, 2005년 4월 미국 LA·워싱턴·필라델피아·뉴욕 4개 도시 순회연주, 2006년 일본 NHK방송국 신년음악회 초청공연과 2007년 일본 3대도시 순회연주회는 세계무대에서 인정받는 합창단으로 자리매김 하는 계기가 되었다. 특히, 뉴욕 카네기홀과 일본에서의 연주는 평론가들로부터 청중의 가슴을 적시는 최고의 명연주였다는 호평을 받으며 한국 합창의 위상을 드높였다.

전임 작곡가를 두어 한국적이면서도 현대적인 곡을 창작해 연주하고, 새로운 레퍼토리를 시도하려는 인천시립합창단의 창조적인 도전은 2009년 세계 합창인들의 꿈의 무대로 알려진 미국합창지휘자총연합회(ACDA Convention)에 정식 초청이라는 가슴 벅찬 결실을 맺기도 했다.

The Incheon City Chorale, which shows the essence of choral music through beautiful and refined tone, is Korea's top chorale, representing the nation and receiving high praise from choral enthusiasts and critics worldwide.

After having been founded in 1981, the chorale was reorganized in 1995. And by the current Music Director, Professor Hak-won Yoon, who is the great master of Korean choral music, it has been reborn as a chorale with fantastic harmony of unique color and original stage presentation, pleasantly surprising and impressing the choral devotees. Through regular performances, diverse repertories and consistent record producing, the chorale is evaluated for possessing both popularity and musicality.

The numerous performances given abroad and within the nation has enabled the Incheon City Chorale to become a cultural envoy that introduces Korean choral music and culture. And in respect to the reputation, the chorale has been recognized for its value, receiving much love. In 1997, the Incheon City Chorale was invited to the 15th founding anniversary of the World Choral Symposium held by the International Federation of Choral Music (IFCM) in Belgium. And in Austria, it participated in the Europa Cantat, receiving a standing ovation for three times from over 3000 conductors. In 1999, the Chorale was invited to give a performance in the 5th World Symposium in Rotterdam, Netherlands and gave a performance tour in Europe. In 2002, the Chorale performed at the World Choral Games' Gala Concert in Busan, Korea; in 2004, it participated in the International Choral Festival in Taipei, Taiwan; and in April of 2005, the Chorale went on a performance tour in four cities in the United States, including Los Angeles, Washington, Philadelphia, and New York. In 2006, the Chorale was invited to the Japanese NHK Broadcasting Station New Years Opera Concert and in 2007, it gave a performance in three major Japanese cities, securing its position as a globally recognized chorale. The performance given at the New York Carnegie Hall in particular was praised for moving the audience and leaving them deeply touched, lifting the pride of Korean chorale to another level.

The Incheon City Chorale has its own exclusive composer who researches and develops Korean and modern music. And through creative challenge to venture new repertories, the Incheon City Chorale has been honored and invited to the dream stage of choral musicians worldwide, the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA Convention).
