인천시립합창단 연주에 찾아온 대부분의 관객들은 그들의 뛰어난 연주와 기획력에 놀라움을 금치 못한다. 비단, 연주의 완성도를 넘어 같은 인간이기에 느낄 수 있는 다양한 감성과 인생에 대한 고찰, 신과 인간, 인간과 인간과의 관계 등 여러 주제를 합창의 다양한 매개- 극도의 긴장감과 숭고함, 때로는 코믹 등으로-와 뛰어난 음악언어로 한없는 감동을 선사한다. 또한 극도의 긴장감에 유머러스한 반전을 통해 관객들이 연주에 몰입할 수밖에 없게 만드는 다이내믹한 공연 구성과 연주력, 단원들의 다양하고 뛰어난 캐릭터 소화력은 합창이라는 예술이 무대에서 줄 수 있는 모든 매력을 인천시립합창단이 모두 지녔다 정의해도 무방할 것이다.

이는 세계에서 먼저 인정했는데, 1997년 벨기에에서 열린 IFCM 창립 15주년 기념 세계 합창제와 오스트리아 Europa Cantat 에서 3000여명의 지휘자들이 세 번이나 기립해 찬사의 박수를 보낸 것으로 시작해 1999년 네덜란드 로테르담에서 열린 세계 합창 심포지엄 초청연주와 유럽 순회연주, 2002년 부산 합창올림픽의 갈라 콘서트, 2004년 대만 세계합창제 초청연주, 2005년 4월 미국 LA·워싱턴·필라델피아·뉴욕 4개 도시 순회연주, 2006년 일본 NHK방송국 신년음악회 초청공연과 2007년 일본 3대도시 순회연주회, 특히 뉴욕 카네기홀과 일본에서의 연주는 평론가들로부터 청중의 가슴을 적시는 최고의 명연주였다는 호평을 받은 것과 2009년 미국 ACDA 초청 National Convention에서 첫 곡이 끝나자마자 수천 명의 관객이 충격에 휩싸여 기립박수와 열광으로 이들에게 찬사를 보낸 것으로 입증 할 수 있을 것이다.

범접하지 못할 만큼 뛰어난 연주력을 지닌 것만으로 인천시립합창단을 설명하기에는 역부족이다. 과거 몇 년 동안은 세계적인 현대 합창곡을 한국에 들여와 소개한 개화의 선두였다면, 지금은 전임 작곡가(우효원)를 통해 한국전통 음악을 소스로 하여 파격적이고 모더니컬화한 합창곡을 끊임없이 양산하고, 이를 세계에 알리는 일을 최초로 시작한 글로벌화 1세대가 되었다. 이들의 행보는 한국 합창이 세계적으로 도약한 최초의 도전이자 결과물이다. 또한 머무르지 않고 끊임없이 변화를 주도해 한국과 세계합창의 멘토가 되었다는 것, 그리고 관객과 진솔한 대화를 시도하는 열린 합창단이라는 것이 연주력 하나로만 이들을 평가 할 수 없는 절대 가치가 있다. 인천시립합창단의 도전과 창조정신은 한국과 아시아를 넘어 세계의 이목을 집중시켰다는 것에 이제는 그리 놀라울 일이 아니다.

Incheon City Chorale is the pride of Incheon Metropolitan City, the global city of Korea, and at the same time the pride of the Korean choral. Since its establishment in 1981 and re-establishment in 1995, the Incheon City Chorale has been ceaselessly evolving by the leading of Hakwon Yoon, the current art director. The chorale was always at its best. Their superb performance and passion has been the icon not only of Korea but also of Asia choral. Most of the audience who come to see them falls into great amazement because of their surpassing performance and stage planning. Not to mention the perfection of the performance, the chorale delivers boundless impressions by expressing various themes such as colorful sensitivities, meaning of life, God and human, human and human through various choral methods-extreme tense and sublimity, sometimes in comic way-and distinguished musical language. Also, their dynamic performance such as adding humor to an extreme tense, and great character interpretations of each member make audience gets absorbed into it. It is right to say that the Incheon City Chorale possesses all the attractiveness that the choral art could give on the stage.

The world has first recognized their ability. 3000 conductors all rose to praise the Incheon City Chorale for three times in 1997 Belgium 15th Anniversary of IFCM Establishment World Choral Festival and in Austria Europa Cantat. Through their performances in 1999 Rotterdam Netherlands World Choral Symposium Invitation Performance, Europe Tour, 2002 Busan Choral Olympics Gala Concert, 2004 Taiwan World Choral Festival Invitation Performance, April 2005 US Tour: LA, Washington, Philadelphia, New York, 2006 Japan NHK New Years Concert Invitation Performance, 2007 Japan 3 Metropolitan Cites Tour, and especially in New York Carnegie Hall and in Japan, the chorale received favorable notice from critiques; the best performance that deeply touched the hearts of the audience. Also, in 2009 US ACDA Invitation National Convention, in astonishment, thousands of audience praised with fantastic applause just right after the first song. All of these prove their superb ability. It is just not enough to describe the Incheon City Chorale with only of their untouchable performance. For the past few years, they have been introducing prominent modern chorus to Korea thus standing in the front line of enlightenment. Now, through a full time composer (Hyo-won Woo), they are constantly making exceptional and modernized chorus with Korean traditional music as its source and became the first generation to globalizing their work to the world.

Their work is the very first challenge and fruit of Korean choral making a global leap. Being a mentor to Korea and world choral by taking the initiative of change, and also being an open minded choral trying to have sincere communication with audience give them the absolute value which makes them not to be judge only by their performing art. Challenging and creative spirit of the Incheon City Chorale has caught the eyes of Korea, Asia and the world, and this is now no more surprising news.
